Went for a meal here the other night, the whole experience was lovely and the food was honestly out this world I had a steak and it truly was the best steak I've ever had! Can't wait to return - Stephen Hubbard (Oct 2014)
We had an absolutely delicious meal on Saturday evening!! I had forgotten the delights of Tims food- it's miles beyond what any other pub can produce- this, coupled with the fabulous interior, friendly staff and great atmosphere made for a perfect evening! Can't recommend Tim and Claire's pub enough! Ellie & Anthony - Ellie Rose Heathwood (Sep 2014)

Fantastic meal & great nite out with good friends, well worth the trip out of town, thx, recommend to all! - Jo Digby (Aug 2014)
We have been to The Fox three times now, and every time we've had a fantastic meal, the service is great.
The chef produced a celiac meal for us, with no warning and not being on the menu.
Definitely recommend The Fox to all - Terri Scott (June 2014)
“a lesson for all pubs”
I was lucky enough to be taken to this pub for lunch during a daytime event nearby. I was bowled over by the superb decor, its a really stylish yet warm and comfortable interior. it still feels like a pub, but with an interesting modern twist. The staff were fantastic, service fast and food superb and excellent value for money. Dull old boring pubs that are moaning about their failing business take note, this is how you get and keep customers! Peter Reed (Nov 2014)
“Great food, lovely decor, warm & welcoming owners”
We had fantastic food up at the Fox last night and service was quick. Just what we needed as we were off to a Firework night thereafter. It was terrible weather and The Fox was a warm, welcoming haven and we were very tempted to stay there and not bother going back out in the rain! The decor is massively improved and lots of quirky ideas, which makes it very interesting for the young members of the family. In the 10 years we have lived in the area, this pub has gone through various changes (not always good), but Tim and Claire have really injected some style into this place. Tim's menus regularly change, so it never gets boring. Well done guys - Claire M (Nov 2014)
“What an improvement!”
We popped in here just by chance, having decided on the spur of the moment to go out for lunch. What a lucky coincidence! From the moment we were greeted warmly by the front of house staff, to the moment we left, it was a very good experience indeed. My husband said that the Belly of Pork he had was the best he had ever tasted. We've lived in this area for over 30 years now and, as other reviewers have mentioned, this pub/restaurant has had a chequered career with plenty of ups and downs. However, long may the present owners continue to offer such an excellent dining experience practically on our doorstep. Good Luck with your new venture - we will certainly be back for more! - Kentish Maid (Oct 2014
“This is how it should be done.”
Ok, so every now and then you are lucky enough to actually find that something incredibly special. If you have ever driven past the fox and wondered, don't; just stop, eat and soak it all up. If you live anywhere nearby (we drove 45 minutes) then take time out and visit!
If you want to eat fantastic food at reasonable prices in a really great atmosphere then this is the place. If you wonder what your ideal local should be like. .....visit the fox then report back.
The meal and experience were absolutely faultless - Pug000 (Oct 2014)
We were first drawn in by the lovely look of the pub. The owner/chef and his partner were lovely as were the staff. Lovely homely interior, clean and comforting.
The meals we had (we both chose different things) were excellent. We were staying at Alexander House Hotel and we can honestly say that the Chef of AJ's restaurant could learn a few things from this Chef. The wine we chose was inexpensive but still added to the overall experience.
We would highly recommend this pub and eating house and if in the area again will definately go back. - Carolynne A (Aug 2014)
“Outstanding food service and value”
My wife and I popped in for a Sunday lunchtime meal and we can both honestly say that the meal was one of the best we have had for a long time. After only intending to pop in for some food, the atmosphere was so nice that we ended staying hours longer than we had anticipated. The pub is about a 40 minute drive for us, but now we have discovered it, we will certainly be back. Well done to all involved we certainly received a warm welcome and were made to feel at home straight away. 10/10 - Pigsac (Aug 2014)
“Warm, friendly welcome”
After a long, cold walk, we stumbled upon The Fox. We were welcomed by a friendly barman. When settled in front of a warm log fire, we ordered some sandwiches and fries, these were well presented and absolutely delicious. After unsuccessfully trying to get a cab to take us back to the hotel were staying at, we gladly accepted a lift from the pub owner. What a pleasant experience, a warm, cosy pub, great food and a very welcome lift back for us! Sweetie709 (Dec 2014)
“Great Pub Grub and Real Ale too.”
Thank God we've got the Fox back, and better than ever. Fantastically run by dynamic couple who really care about service and quality; still manage to keep it friendly and fun. Only niggle, can be a long wait for food, but hey - better than instantly microwaved.
If what you're looking for is a proper country pub where you can enjoy a well cared for ale by the fire while you browse a tempting menu, you're in luck. Family-Groze (Dec 2014)
Had a truly excellent meal here last night, three courses - scallops, steak (best I've had in a long time) & chocolate tart (which wasn't even on the menu but was brought out specially for me!) Lovely cosy atmosphere with a log fire. Would highly recommend! - Daisy May Downe (Dec 2014)
“Amazing and wonderful meal at the Fox”
Went to 'The Fox' for Sunday lunch last weekend and was truly impressed by the experience. The food was outstanding from start to finish and had obviously been prepared by someone passionate about what they were doing. The roast beef was excellently cooked - a world away from standard pub sunday lunch offerings. It was tender and had lots of flavour. The accompanying vegetables again were well prepared and were interesting and delicious. Although not drinking myself on this occasion, others in my party commented that each of the wines they had selected had been very good. Desserts and local cheese selection were excellent and the added flourish of home made ice creams with the desserts and home made breads and chutneys with the cheese really set the meal apart in my opinion. Very rare to see this kind of attention to detail. The front of house team were very welcoming and attentive throughout. Altogether a wonderful, delicious meal and a great experience. nvgjbgcgjevuj (May 2015)
“Congratulations & Well Done”
This is a long overdue but “great” review of the Fox Eating & Drinking House and I this was inspired by another great visit last night to attend the one year anniversary event. It seems hard to believe that Tim & Clare (Landlord & Landlady) a have created such an amazing venue from scratch in such a short time. On the many occasions that we have visited the Fox, we have always been impressed by the attention to detail in every area, from the amazing food to the choice of wines the approachable and friendly service to the quirky décor all of these combined just make this place great !! we would willingly recommend the Fox as it is so rare that you can find a great pub or restaurant with all of the above delivered consistently. This is clearly down to the hard work and tireless attention to detail of both Tim & Clare who deserve a “big pat” on the back. Chinagirl (April 2015)
“Wonderful setting, delicious food, excellent service!”
Went with my fiancé for dinner. Really nice eclectic mix of decorations that work incredibly well together. Very pleasant staff behind and in front of the bar. We were served drinks immediately and given a choice of where to sit. We ordered a starter to share along with some crusty bread which was served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The crab salad starter is fantastic. The two mains we ordered were a mushroom risotto (which is usually a starter but they were more than happy to offer a larger portion as a main) and the Jacobs ladder ribs. The ribs are slow cooked and very tender. The mushroom risotto had hints of truffle. Both were delightful and we will be back again to try more. Rob B (April 2015)
“Always in search of a great Sunday Roast”
Booked lunch at the Fox for the first time and wasn't disappointed.. I can honestly say the roast potatoes are the best I have ever had in any restaurant, the beef was cooked to our own preference and was fabulous. Atmosphere was relaxed the owner/ chef was very charming and friendly as were his staff. We live 40 minutes away but have every intention of making this a regular. Edward N (March 2015)
“Brilliant.... Saved the day”
After a day at the terrible Ravenswood Wedding venue near by these beautiful people fed us with fantastic food and sent us on our way happy again. Steve J (May 2015)
“Excellent pub, fab lunch”
With exciting menus, Harvey's on tap, top rated chunky chips & atmosphere, need I say more! Delightful family run pub with real vision ! Johnathan B (Sep 15)
“What a find”
On our way home from a weekend in Brighton. What a find. Superb food, great choice and quality. Service with a smile. Lew London (June 15)
We have now eaten several times at The Fox and have to say we have enjoyed every single meal. The menu is imaginative and varied and the food has always been superb, and the wine list is very good and reasonably priced. The atmosphere is relaxed but efficient and very friendly. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend it (and we do!) Gordon W (May 2015)
“The best roast I've had in a long time”
Went to The Fox to celebrate my daughters Birthday. Starters were fab, I had the warm beetroot salad, a good size portion for a starter. We then all had roast dinners, as there was a choice of sirloin, lamb and chicken. Roast potatoes were delicious and the sirloin was cooked perfectly, and had a lovely flavour. The front of house team were very attentive and service was faultless. Will definitely make The Fox a regular from now on. Jezza23 (June 15)
“Best chips ever!!”
My husband and I found this little pub in March. We have been back here now a few times and have never had a bad meal. The standard really is very high and the price is not so it's also great value. The service is quick and staff really friendly. It's got a great country atmosphere with local often sitting at the bar. If you go here you MUST have the triple cooked chips! Best i've ever tasted! Highly recommend. Angharad82 (July 15)
“All good will be back”
Been several times as good as all the reviews say it is, querky little place with nice lighting, good food and drinks - well done !!

“Cosy pub with delicious food”
What a great little place! Really quite tucked away, but worth the winding roads to find. The gentlemen serving us was friendly and didn't rush us at all, which matched how we were feeling, because out in the middle of nowhere, it's best to feel chilled out! The food was really delicious, one of the tastiest chicken pate's I've ever had, followed by the most tender rare fillet of beef. Dessert was fantastic too, a thick and chocolatey sponge with vanilla ice cream. Really cosy place with lots of character and charm with tasty food to match; will definitely be going again soon. CeruleanSun (Sep 15)
“Hidden gem ”
We popped in for a bite to eat on a quiz night. Really friendly people great atmosphere and we didn't even hear the quiz. Food is just top class. The liver and bacon is the best I have tasted. We throughly enjoyed everything about this place. Highly recommended. Jo B (Sep 15)
“A Real Find”
Went with family for Sunday Lunch to celebrate 11 year olds birthday. The dining room isn't big but it's bright. Just how a country pub shoul be.The food was very good. We had a variety of starters and all were delicious. Four of us had the Sunday roast which was beef. All meals came together 3 rare and one well done as requested. Two others of our group had Slow cooked ribs of beef again delicious. The Landlady asked which dessert the birthday girl had chosen then brought her the chocolate fondant with a candle and played happy birthday for her. A lovely touch. The staff were all really helpful service was excellent. Would we go again a big 'Yes ' from all of us. Hannah 58 (Sep 15)
Went for dinner on Friday evening and everything was fantastic. Lovely friendly staff and the Jacobs ladder was incredible! Portion sizes were huge as well. Will defiantly go back again. 309 Ally (Oct 15)
“Fancied a country pub.... FANTASTIC!!”
Arrived late on a Sunday afternoon at about 3.30. Made to feel very welcome immediately. Hubs had the local pork and hop sausages sandwich with chunky triple cooked chips- both delicious. I went for.the Grouse... obviously cooked to order- no frozen stuff here! 25 mins later a tower of sumptuous delight arrived. Plucked and skinned and and tasted incredible sitting on a great crispy rosti with very rich pate on a savoy cabbage bed. Can't fault anything. Hubs ordered the chilli bowl in the gap and that too was very tasty. Even the house red was very respectable. Menu is split between a lite list and a starter/main, which must be a changing menu according to availability of local produce. It's shooting season so should be great food coming up!! The lady of the house Claire was very welcoming, all staff were nice and friendly and the chef popped out too, -he told us about all the upcoming delights! Trio of chocolate for desert... a delightful mixture of chocolate texture and flavour. Really relaxed and homely atmosphere - wish it was my local!!I hope to come back very soon. twoplustwoplustwo (Oct 15)
What People Are Saying About Us
“Great little find”
Kept passing this pub for sometime, quaint looking on a corner edge. Entering the pub, there was an immediate warmth, lovely log fires and a warm welcome. Lovely decorated, cosy and stylish. The black pudding scotch egg was to die for, great beer selection meaning Harvey's for me, friendly helpful staff with great background music. Really enjoyed this place, could not fault it and excellent value for money. Will certainly be back very soon. Paul M (Nov 15)
Wow as foodies and a nutritionist we would say it is probably the best pub food we have had in the mid Sussex area... Definitely worth a try!
NancyTSussex (March 2016)
“Just as good as first time”
We'd been raving about this place to some friends so we all decided to stop there after a fun afternoon. We hadn't booked, but were greeted nicely as the bar was open and both log fires were simmering nicely on a cool squib of an evening.
The menu is really quite filling to read let alone when you eat the excellent food. Mussels were one dish ordered, steak x2 soup and a burger. All were devoured without any hesitation and no room for puddings. I do love my food, so it's always a bonus when my tummy screams No More!
Service was top score. Great staff who are employed with a naturally happy cheery persona. As we left, the restaurant started to fill up nicely with the anticipation of great food. It certainly fulfils that.
Hoping to get back in the next couple of weeks. Def a great eating house. Cagneydog (Dec 15)
“A surprisingly delightful lunch”
The Fox has been through some changes and they are all fantastically done. The decor and interior is really delightful and has created a great atmosphere. The food is well, delicious and my only complaint is that they would not let me have seconds! But no the food is seriously tasty and was great value for the family. Simon R (Feb 2016)
Called in at this pub on a sunday at about 3.30 knowing it had probably finished serving lunches as the previous one we tried finished 10 mins before we arrived at 2.30. Much to our surprise we were welcomed with open arms, even advised to have the Jacobs ladder beef, which we did, absolutely beautiful, so flavoursome and tender. We chatted to the waiter and other regular customers whilst waiting for dinner. Thoroughly recommend this place for a comfortable place to eat good food and drink. 411Sally (Feb 2016)
“Good pub, very good food.”
We arrived by bicycle covered in mud and I though we might be unwelcome, but we weren't. Pub is friendly, bar staff friendly, comfortable seating inside and out. Menu is surprisingly varied with some cheap tasty options. I had chicken stew served on mashed potato, my companion had chicken livers and salad, both were about 8 quid. For not much more there were burgers, tuna steak, and more expensive options that looked gorgeous. The stew tasted sublime, for an inexpensive dish I was expecting something rougher, but the presentation, flavour and value was excellent. I can easily understand the other reviews saying the food is worth travelling for, I will be returning. Lumponmyhead (April 2016)
Spur of the moment visit and really glad we did. Lovely place, friendly staff and good, tasty food. Fish dish particularly good. Desserts were beautifully presented and way above the standard of pub food. Will definitely return, soon! Ella d (May 2016)
“What a gem!”
We would love to have a local pub like this. Excellent food, amazing decor and music. Try it and you'll love it. Mark B (June 2016)
“The fantastic food”
Absolutely brilliant food,, cooked to perfection, out does everything else in the area, don't miss this one, we had steaks, risotto etc. none of your pre done stuff here.
“Gorgeous, quirky and fun”
We only had a drink at The Fox while camping at Hook Farm campsite. Every element of this place is faultless. There's piles of quirky little nooks and crannies, with what looks like an amazing, fresh menu. The staff were also incredibly friendly and accommodating. We can't wait to come back to sample the food!
Pavel Jay (July 2016)
“A complete surprise”
One lunchtime we were driving past and decided to call in to see what it was like, well I am glad we did. We both loved the quirky interior. The owner was very attentive but not intrusive. The food was really good. We will certainly come back. HTTraveller (Aug 2016)
This place is an absolute diamond! The quirkily decorated interior was fab, the food was absolutely gorgeous (home cooked rare roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, beautiful veg) Claire the front of house was so friendly and welcoming. I am so looking forward to visiting West Sussex and eating there again! Trina. Trina W (Aug 2016)
“Excellent quirky pub”
My wife and I had an excellent lunch on Bank Holiday Monday. The pub is attractive and quirky with humorous signs all over the place. The one about the chicken was my favourite. We were made very welcome by the owner and the chef. The food was great quality, tasty and well presented. I had the Fox burger, I am sure it was beef! My wife had the hake. We shared a banofee pie, the best I have ever had. All the usual ingredients but not too sweet as it so often is.
Mike G (Aug 2016)
“The tradition English country pub given a contemporary touch.”
In the depths of the Sussex countryside we found this gem of a pub with a warm welcome and good food. This pub has everything you would expect of a country pub, with a modern touch. There is a choice of tradition pub food, or some more innovative dishes and local beers alongside he more usual multi national brews. The welcome was warm and helpful, and locals came and went while we lunched, making it obvious that this is very much a community asset. Hope we can find it again John R (Oct 2016)
“Quality local produce, cooked with skill, served with a smile…”
The owners, chefs and front of house team all clearly share a genuine passion for providing quality food married with exceptional wine, served with real foodie passion.... This gastro pub is simply a proper good find; If you want to read a menu and have your taste buds tingle and like excellent food served with quality wine at a reasonable price, you will be bowled over by The Fox. JetSet Greg (Oct 2016)
“Loved It! (Vegetarian Perspective)”
Had dinner here mid week, our last pub meal at the end of a two week UK trip. The Fox was recommended to us by a staffer at the hotel we were staying at. His local apparently. We called to book, apparently got the chef, asked if he could accommodate vegetarians. His reply "Depends on how big their feet are ". We knew this was our place. Eclectic interior. Hard to call this a pub in the classic sense. But we really liked the ambiance and the off beat decor. Had a great table near the fireplace. Tim and Claire came out to chat as we looked over the menu. Food was killer. Roasted cauliflower and garlic soup to start. Served with amazing multigrain herbed rolls. Mushroom risotto as our entree. Outstanding. Service was spot on from start to finish. Moderately busy for a midweek evening. We would certainly return. Highly recommended. Randyhol (Oct 2016)
“Best Sunday lunch by far!”
My husband and I had been on a long country walk and decided as it was nearly lunchtime so to find an eatery... well what can I say, we arrived to a very warm welcome by all the staff (it was early, I think the doors had only just been opened) and they were fully booked apart from one small table which they offered to us. My husband chose calf liver and bacon whilst I chose roast beef fillet and what can I say BOTH were absolutely fantastic my beef was rare and just melted in the mouth and the assorted vegetables were perfectly cooked and my husbands liver was... "simply the best and the bacon was the most bacony tasting bacon he ever had" we couldn't stop there and both decided on deconstructed apple and blackberry crumble with vanilla ice cream for desert- this was quite simply divine - we will definitely return again and book to take friends. KateHales (Nov 2016)
“Post walk lunch”
After a longer than expected walk in the country we found this by chance but so glad we did. A very warm welcome and they managed to find a table for lunch too though they were fully booked so suggest booking in future. Superb menu with very tasty well cooked and presented food - apple and blackberry crumble was the best I have ever had! Will definitely be back.... MichealHales (Nov 2016)
“Excellent Sunday lunch”
Last minute pub lunch and staff couldn't be more helpful and accommodating, even with a busy sitting. Unlike The Cat Inn up the road, who frankly couldn't be more unhelpful. Delicious food and thoroughly recommend. Rebecca F (Dec 2016)
All the meals are freshly prepared using excellent ingredients and this is exemplified by the truly superb chips - probably the best in Sussex.
Mitchelin Tom (Dec 2016)
“New Years Eve”
Lovely atmosphere with a cheery welcome. No set menu enforced. Table for 4 with different choices - starters of Scallops, Crab salad, Blue cheese Fritters followed by Haunch of BBQ Venison, Panfried breast Pheasant, Grilled Ribeye of Beef and the Fox house burger all deliciously cooked, tender, plentiful and well presented. Will definitely revisit soon !! Maclaughlin (Jan 2017)
“Fantastic buffet meal for large group”
We held our Christmas do for just under 30 people here. Excellent food both savoury and sweet (desserts), really varied range to suit all tastes and ages. Friendly and attentive service, without being intrusive. Really would recommend. Parryhousehold (Jan 2017)
We found it by accident and were amazed at the great menu, wonderful food and quirky atmosphere. Exceptional Ervin D (Jan 2017)
